Whitworth had an eventful life: he was born into a prominent Manchester industrial & political dyanasty, but his father found it necessary to emigrate to Kansas, USA, "to repair his fortunes" & JHW was Ed. at the State Normal School at Emporia. By age 16 his parents were dead & he wound up the family farm. Returning to England (where "people used at times to remark upon a certain uncouthness of manner" - the wild prairie evidently having left its mark) he continued his education at Bowden College & Wadham College, Oxford. Became a Barrister (& stood unsuccessfully for Parliament twice), he was commissioned in 1914 in the 2/6th (Territorial) Bn., Manchester Regt., went to France with the Bn. in 1917 & received MC in July, was gassed, returned as 2i/c in Sept., won DSO commanding bn. in March Retreat, wounded 26/3/18 & DoW 31/3/18 in hospital at Rouen. A detailed biography including extracts from letters from the Front. Orig. blue cloth, gilt, VG & scarce. See illustration on our website.
